Southernmost Point Is Relocating To A New Location In Key West
One of Key West’s most famous landmarks, the Southernmost Point Buoy, is about to get a temporary new home. Starting this September, visitors looking to snap that iconic photo will need to head a little further up Duval Street while the city makes long-overdue repairs to the buoy’s plaza.
Where is the new location for the Southernmost Point?
The buoy is moving just a short walk away to Duval Street Pocket Park, 1400 Duval Street, right between the Southernmost Mansion and the Southernmost Resort. This makes it easy for visitors to still check “Southernmost Point photo” off their Key West bucket list while the original site is under construction.
Why are they moving the Southernmost Point?
Years of storm damage have taken a toll on the seawall and plaza surrounding the buoy. The City of Key West announced that repairs are needed to reinforce the seawall, redo the roadway, and restore the area to make it safe and long-lasting for future visitors. Crews will also address other structural damage at the corner of South Street and Whitehead Street.
When is the Southernmost Point moving?
The relocation is expected to happen in September 2025, with the replica buoy being built and painted locally by Paul Cassidy and Richard Sarver of Key West’s Community Services Department.
How long will it be there?
The project is expected to take about a year, which means the replica buoy at Duval Street Pocket Park will serve as the official photo spot until late 2026. Once the seawall and plaza repairs are complete, the original buoy will once again welcome visitors back at its traditional home at the corner of South and Whitehead.
